Martial Arts takes a lifetime of learning so that makes the decision parents have to make for their child that much more important. What are some of the objectives of the program? What are some of the benefits? Should you invest in your child’s physical and mental health? Is it enough to educate them in the school systems where peer pressure can be an enormous weight to bear for a young mind? All of these questions can carry some weight and some more weight than others.
Put aside what you have heard, read or thought about Martial Arts. The dynamics of the system you choose will be based on what you believe the system can do for your child. Learning Martial Arts is not about fighting or physical activity only, it is about training the mind, body and spirit to recognize the balance and order of the universe.
The balance and order of the universe in our time is definitely different then when most of the Martial arts systems were created. For instance force was used to take control of most situations. Although some of that exist today in some instances it usually takes the wiser mind then the tougher body to control pending issues arising throughout ones daily life.
The objectives of children’s classes vary but should teach children that it is far better to work in harmony with, rather than against others, to find solutions to the inevitable interpersonal problems that will arise during one’s lifetime. Also the teaching methods should encourage your child to help others to succeed. Look for programs that put less weight on win-lose situations and find those that stress cooperation, not competition in most exercises.
Children also learn better when there is a routine, once they have started a program they will began to feel safe and secure, when they become safe and secure they become better learners. Each class should also be structured to provide ten to fifteen minute periods and should be broken down into segments such as:
The benefits of a good Martial Arts program are enormous. Learning to defend one’s self in most situations, providing another avenue for learning the values like respect for others and self-discipline can be the foundation that prepares a young mind for adolescence and adulthood.
Other benefits include:
- Increased Confidence
- Self-Actualization
- Better Focus and Concentration
- A Strong Healthy Body
- Greater Self-Defense Skills!
These benefits also create an attitude that “Success is a Habit”. Cultivating success leads to greater awareness of ones ability’s and increases self-esteem that will give children the tools needed to succeed in the Martial Arts program chosen.
Your child’s physical and mental health is fundamental. Children will express themself throughout their life with the only body and mind they have so if their mind and body are not balanced then all other aspects of their life can be affected. Needless to say their physical and mental health should be one of your highest priorities. When your child cares for their body and keeps it in a state of optimal health their minds become healthier and every part of their life is balanced. But like everything else, this requires effort on your’s as well as your child’s part because if you allow your child to ignore their body they lose the will to foster optimal health. So a good martial arts system is a valuable investment for your child. Children face many obstacles and temptations within the framework of organized education. The obvious challenges at school arise from the schools inability to protect children from all the dangers that a student can confront. Let’s face it schools are there to provide education scholastically but cannot control all the social behaviors that your child may face. So let a Martial Arts program provide your child with the knowledge and understanding they would need to protect themselves mentally or physically.
Teaching Toddlers Martial Arts
The technical standard of martial arts practitioners in the West is extremely high indeed, from the modern combat sports like Kick-Boxing and Ultimate Fighting to the more traditional arts of Karate, jiu-Jitsu, etc British martial artists have made their mark the world over. and are acknowledged by all as being ranked among the worlds best.
So should your child take Martial Arts? The answer is yes but as a parent you know what is best for your child and “learning is fundamental” rather it is in a class room setting are at a martial arts school. Providing your child with everything they need to be successful in all aspects of their lives is what sets them apart from others “so why not learn martial arts”.

This was a great article to inspire mum's and dad's to get their kids off the streets and take up Martial Arts..it's an all round fitness program, has all the right mental attitude kids need in this day and age without haveing to resort to 'ASBO' to vent off steam and also teaches a respect towards others.
