Natasha Hookham, a Taekwondo student from West Sussex
I’ve been practising Taekwondo for nearly four years and I’m due to take my black belt in October. As I am currently very close to my black belt, I am training with Mr David Honey in the week at his schools in Felpham, Russington and Worthing and in Cambridgeshire at the weekends at the Mark Farnham School of Taekwondo but when I hopefully gain my 1st Dan, I’ll be staying down here in West Sussex.
Mr Honey is a 3rd Dan and has been teaching for a number of years. He has also been a member of the British squad and has a stash of medals, although I don’t think this automatically makes you a good instructor as personality is far more important. However, Dave has quite a relaxed style of teaching and his programme is varied and in his case, his instructing style works very well.
My fellow pupils seem like a friendly bunch, even though I am the new girl on the block. There are far fewer women at this club than in Cambridgeshire, which is a bit disappointing as a large amount of my female friends in East Anglia practise Taekwondo as well.
I enjoy doing Taekwondo because it is an enjoyable way to keep fit and there is a strong social aspect to it as well. During the day my job involves a lot of responsibility as a buyer for an organic produce company but Taekwondo means I have to use my brain in a totally different way to work.
