Martial Coach Kathy Marlor is one of the most experienced martial arts coaches and consultants in the industry today. On your journey to becoming a skilled black belt and an outstanding martial arts instructor, you developed a type of "Warrior Spirit" that can be tapped into and used in your daily life to achieve your goals.
To accomplish your black belt regardless of the style(s) you've trained in you most likely had to:
1. Make a decision that you were going to earn your black belt no matter what.
2. Follow the training success plan your instructor presented to you.
3. Stay encouraged and overcome personal obstacles along the way.
4. Work towards making constant progress and be ready to make changes.
5. Discover how to capitalize on your strengths and improve weaknesses.
6. Get a coach or mentor you could ask for help when needed.
The warrior spirit you developed on the journey to black belt may be one of quiet confidence and knowing that you can overcome any obstacle through patience, creative problem solving and persistence; or it may be one of assertive fast moving, driving forward motion that knows no limits to possibilities and strives on fearlessly. Whether you warrior spirit in one that fits into one of the descriptions above, or somewhere in between, what’s important is that you have it and can use it to create success over and over again.

Here are some tips for using what you’ve learned through the arts and applying your warrior spirit into all areas of your life.
1. Decide to set a goal with the same intent you did when you set a goal to earn a black belt. If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you dare to achieve? Commit yourself 100% to go for it.
2. Create a success plan to achieve your goal just as you had a martial arts success plan presented to you by your instructor. Your black belt plan included following a curriculum, attending a certain amount of classes, practicing, being evaluated, and more. Your success plan must list each step you will take to accomplish your goal. Think as you have already achieved your goal and write down each element that had to happen to be a success.
3. Remember how you held fast and didn’t give up as you worked towards achieving your black belt? Do the same with your new goal, overcome obstacles and keep yourself encouraged and motivated with the same attitude as your past success.
4. Strive to improve (at least 1%) and work towards your goal each day to make constant progress. Be ready to change when necessary and regroup. If you’re instincts tell you that you’re getting off in the wrong direction, listen and re-evaluate your course.
5. Look for ways to capitalize on your strengths and improve your weaknesses. Learn something new everyday to help your cause. Chances are when you’re sparring, you use your strong techniques and camouflage the ones that aren’t so great while you continue to make improvements. The same is true with goal setting, put your strong points to work, improve the weak ones and in the mean time don’t let them get in the way of progress.
6. Ask for help. Get a coach, a mentor, network with others who have achieved the same goals before you. Model success in your goals just as you did as you worked towards improving your martial arts skills.
There are amazing similarities in successful goal setting and accomplishment and the qualities one develops on the road to black belt. Tap into that "warrior spirit" and flashback to your life’s most successful moments to help you create the life you want.
