Martial Art ArticlesRichard Grannon explores his 13 rules for success in Hand to Hand Combat. Are you a serious martial artist? Then read on...

1. Do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING you can to win. Hit first, hit hard and keep the pressure on until all your enemies are out COLD. This requires GUTS, ATTITUDE AND MINDSET, techniques are not important; your attitude is what will keep you standing and others out on the pavement.

2. Be aware of your surroundings. For example, when you enter a restaurant, check where the exits are, check whathandtohand2.jpg are the possible weapons (boiling water, knifes, chairs, ashtrays etc.), look for obstacles that you can block your enemies with. Formulate a escape plan in your mind if anything happens. When you are out in the street, actively scan the environment of who are around you and what can they do you (imagine yourself as the criminal, find out when are you vulnerable.) BUT DON’T STAY IN YOUR HEAD FOR TOO LONG.

3. When confronted, don’t let anyone get into your personal space! If you can’t talk your way out of trouble, drop them hard and fast. If not, RUN!

4. DON”T let ANYONE psych you out! This does not mean to beat everyone that insults you. If a confrontation is about to explode, it’s EITHER YOU OR THEM! You either EAT or BE EATEN. Prey or Predator. If you want to go home safe that night, do everything you can. Get mad. Get really mad. Ask yourself why they are doing this to you when you just want to live a peaceful life! Work yourself to the suitable level of aggression as the situation is called upon.

5. If you are afraid of legality problems before you do something, tell yourself this, if a situation is about to go on and you already did all you can to avoid it, you have to use the degree of force to ensure that you are the one that is alive, you have to do what’s justified. Remember, you got on to a road of no return already, so why worry about all the problems. DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO. Be it ripping his ears off, bouncing his head off the pavement like a basketball star, whatever it takes. Just watch out, I can’t tell you what to do in what situation, you have to get judge it yourself a lot of times.

6. DO NOT mistaken aggression, ruthlessness, viciousness as attributes that easily disturbed people have (as in “snapping”, angry etc.). They are like an emptied 9mm, looks scary, but it has nothing. Never be intimidated by them. They can be dangerous because of their explosive nature, but a lot of them don’t know what the hell they are doing. You have to learn to harness the aggressive power inside you, a lot of people blindly executed it on their families and friends which are totally useless. You must have that laser beam focus rage, lock on to your targets, and destroy them regardless of what happens to you.

7. When fighting, never think your enemies as the same type as you. Visualize them as sub humans, goblins, targets. Sickening thought isn’t it? Well it’s not so sick when three goblins are trying to make holes on your body. This tactic had been proven in war times to give the soldier a cruel power. Racist terms aren’t designed to insult people blindly, they are propaganda tactics to make the people think that they are different, like animals that they can do whatever they want to without involving a single emotion.

8. NEVER EVER GIVE UP! If you are dead, you are dead. If you are alive, you are alive, it’s simple as that. I don’t care if he is shooting you with a gun, if you are still alive you ARE GONNA FUCKING SMASH HIS HEAD DOWN TO HELL! If you are alive, continue fighting, and win.

9. Always assume worst possible condition, such as getting ambushed by armed, determined, huge MULTIPLE assailants when having a broken ankle! Never think you will be able to fight in the comfort of a dojo. Always assume the goblins are carrying weapons even when you don’t see it, watch their hands, can you see the palm of their hands when they get close to you? If not, he probably has a knife ready on his hands. (As said on rule number three, don’t let people get close to you unless you trust them!)

10. Size matters. Strength matters. Don’t let any martial arts bullshit fool you. A good big man will almost always beat a good small man. BUT if you have the aggressive spirit needed to win, you will have 270lbs in your mind, a mental physique. But isn’t it better to have both? We are not talking about bodybuilding, but REAL world strength, functional strength (Feel free to do some research on functional fitness.) Strength will do you a lot of good. If you need to stop someone fast on the street, strength helps. It saves you A LOT of hassles. Being big and strong can already intimidate a lot of people. And people won’t be able to strong arm you, toss you around, WHILE YOU can do the opposite.

11. Keep things simple, don’t let too much experts advices get in your way, stick to the basic and work hard. Simple strategies are much better when fighting in dangerous environments because you won’t have to think too much.

12. When you successfully win over a situation (WE NEVER EVER say “defense”, we are not defenders.) RUN, get the fuck out of there, don’t admire your work. They might get up. The police might caught you. There are just too many risk, don’t take your chance, run and formulate a plan to escape to safety. (Maybe not to your car or else people might recognize your car number!)

13. When caught by the authorities, don’t say a word until your lawyer or help arrives. NO MATTER WHAT they say to you, don’t believe them, they are either trying to scare you to make you talk (or even make you freak out by telling you that you will be lock up for the next 20 years) or act like your next best pal (for example, “I know you didn’t do this, the attackers are well known in here. Come on, just tell me what happened and you can go home”) to set you up. Don’t let the thoughts get into your mind. (regular hard fitness training will teach you how to control your emotions) Keep saying “I have nothing to say” or don’t say anything.
