Martial arts is a general term used to unify all manner of fighting styles for combative purposes. There are many different styles of martial arts but all of them follow the same core principle: to defend oneself in a fighting situation. Many martial arts are linked with issues of spiritualism, but there can be more than a meditative reason why people choose to study a martial art. These alternative issues include health and fitness concerns, self defense, confidence building, self expression, sport, competition, mental wellbeing and personal development.

Martial arts styles are often deep rooted in tradition and ceremony, and different countries and continents offer their own interpretations on the various methods involved in self defense. Martial arts is also a general term to involve styles which include weaponry as well as empty handed combat. Often practiced in classes or with a partner, certain martial arts include movements that can be practiced alone. These movements are called forms or katas.

Somebody who practices a martial art is called a martial artist.
