ok you got me i was lurking there in my trench coat ( its all i have on!!!), reading the posts.
but i am shy as no one seems to like me, i have tried to make friends in the past but people just seem to to ignore me or avoid me.
i have addressed the bad breath and body odour but its still the same. i try to be interesting but people dont seem to want to discuss the finer points of imperial and metric measurements.
but as you have discovered me lurking i thought i would take the plunge come out of the shadows and say hello and we can all have a group hug together.
i now feel so much happier that i have some new found friends and that i dont have to sneak around the forums anymore.
nw does anyone out there know anything about how the different measurement systems of imperial and metric cam about??

No, but it sounds fascinating.

Please tell me all about it, I'm fascinated.

As you travel to the mountain, there may be people ahead of you. You may pass some of these people on the way, and some of them may pass you. You are all going to the same place, so it is as well to be civil to each other on the journey!
Good luck on your journey, I hope that our paths cross, and we may travel together for a time!

nice to find someone who's so interested in measurements.
the development of imperial and metric measurements is a little long winded for this medium i suggest you read
Measure for Measure: The Story of Imperial, Metric and Other Units by Alexius J. Hebra
the book offers an engaging and instructive history of measurement systems from ancient times to the present, exploring how and why such units as the stadium, the span and the parsec first came about.
i get excited every time i read it. i've even been prescribed drugs to calm me down in the past. i am only allowed to read now on birthdays and christmas as a treat.

well see its not just the length of the string but the type of string / cord / rope its thickness and load bearing that must be considered.
to ask merely how long a peice of string is, is to miss the point completely.
and by the way i dont want to touch your llama, i am more of a goat man myself.

I stand corrected!
Is it better to use metric or material measurements in determining a formula that can reliably utilised in calculae?

Truth be told, my Llama would deal with you herself, long before I had to intervene.
Many's the time I've had to pick fibres of cheap Gi from between her teeth!
Goats can be relied upon to consume material mankind would otherwise ignore.
Llama, on the other hand, are actively seeking to be pre-emptive in their Mammalian officiousness.
