Recovering from injuries 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I'm new on the forum. I've been spending quite a bit of time online and have just found Martial Edge... great stuff.

Unfortunately the reason for spending lots of time online is that I recently broke my leg. Does anyone have any great tips for building up strength and stamina again. It's all very frustrating having to work from scratch again, particularly when it comes to balance.

Judging by your avatar you don't need your legs!
Listen to your physio it's his/her job, tell them you do martial arts and you require a good recovery.
You will find where ththe bone is bust will heal stronger than before. It's the muscle atrophy you've gotta watch out for and the pain as the muscle knits back to the bone once your out of the cast.
The worst thing you can do is avoid using that leg for fear of it getting bust up again or 'cos it will ache like buggery for a while doing this will only give you a weak leg and fear.
Lastly listen to your body don't push it to far take one day at a time. Remember we get fitter in our recovery period after exercise not whilst we are exercising

You make a great point. The trick to recovering from an injury is finding out how hard to push it. You don't want to be afraid to use it, but you don't want to over exert it either. I had a similar injury when I was younger and I just trusted my therapist and did what she said. Good luck with everything.

Yeah I would totally agree with some of the points made there.

A good example is to look at how professional athletes come back from serious injuries such as Footballers for example.

It takes time and patience and you will have to accept that you wont be back to your best for a while.

Just out of interest how did you do it?

ha. it was a good one. paintballing can be very dangerous. I was charging down hill and when i leapt behind a tree for cover i couldn't stand up.

I actually did it last april and started back at TKD in september. The exercises the physio gave me weren't particularly mobilising and he recommended that getting back to training would be good for it. When you're in a cast and you can't move the joints you get a lot of fluid build up and scar tissue. The aggressiveness of the twisting and pivoting in TKD really helped my mobility and balance.

Unfortunately I'm back off training for 6 weeks as I've just had the plates taken out. It's very frustrating.

Well it sounds like you have a positive mental attitude which is one of the key things....

Yeah your going to lose fitness, but with a proper training schedule you will soon be back to your former self.

In the meantime to beat that frustration get stuck into the forums!!
