I have to agree start low and work your way up.

I usually get brand new students to think of getting on a bike when teaching them low leg round kicks with the shin.

Imagine you're about to get on a bike, with the handlebars facing the direction of the force of the kick. Turn your front supporting foot as if putting your foot on a pedal. Then turn your torso and hip over as if getting on the bike. Then use the momemtum to bring the rear leg round. This is done to a large pad and not to air.

I find this helps as a point of reference rather than pick your leg up at this unusual angle and rotate on your supporting foot, etc. It also helps get power in the kick from the start. From there you can refine things to get more power and height. Also depending on your style, you can then refine the artistic considerations of foot position, chambering, foot retraction, etc.

PS tonyli, how do you do single leg squats?, sounds painful!

(Lots more conditioning exercises in my book, if you're interested. )

There's a decent description on this page:

And a couple YouTube videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEBol54EjVE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovs3T0dAjs4&NR=1

(I just grabbed the top search results for men and women doing them.)

Definitely work on the standard double-leg squat first until you feel like challenging yourself more with the single-leg version.
