Hi TP, I've been doing Wing Chung for about 8 years, I absolutely love the style it is simple and complex, brutal and artisitic. I also feel it is a bit misunderstood alot of people think it is all about chi sao, and that it has no long distance applications, but this is just a question of distance and timing.
What's you take on it?

Well like i said i've only been learning WT for around 4-5 months so i'm still getting to grips with the basics but i also like to do a lot of reading and research on what i'm learning and have spoken to many people about it.
I think simple but complex and brutal but artistic just about covers it
I especially like the Blitz defense aspects of WT which were created by Grandmaster Keith Kernspecht (Can never spell it correctly) and am trying to get hold one of his Books in english. I think i like it as it not only deals with how to handle physical altercations in 'street' situations but also the psychology and also legal aspects. e.g. what to say so that any witnesses know you are the victim, not the aggressor (Even if you make the first physical strike), body language etc etc. Unfortunately very relevant in this compensation/legal age.
But i also enjoy the forms and the discipline. Chi Sao is massively understood especially by parts of the online community but then thats part of the 'T'interwebsphere'. I think people misjudge WC/WT etc because (IMO) it's not really a Traditonal or Martial Art. I tend to think of it as a Martial Discipline.

I don't know a huge amount about Wing Tsun, other that the fact it's an offshoot of Wing Chun. I have a friend who started it awhile back and when I tried to get some information about it the stuff I heard back was hardly complimentary.
"Leung Ting/Kernspecht WingTsun, and its offshoots, are the epitome of the McDojo. Lots of grades, ridiculous fees higher up, no meaningful sparring whatsoever. And they claim it is the most efficient and deadly martial art on Earth. I have personally heard GM Kerspecht say stuff like "the other martial artists, like Karateka, are at best craftsmen. Only the WingTsun man is a true artist"
and:
"think of WT as the Scientology of the Martial Arts. Stupid fees and stupid titles. "Great Grandmaster Leung Ting" is, according to his own grading system, an 11th level "Master of Almightiness", which sounds to me a lot like "Grand Operating Thetan"."

Well I trained with this guy and to my knowledge, he's never said or done anything to bring the art into disrepute.

As you travel to the mountain, there may be people ahead of you. You may pass some of these people on the way, and some of them may pass you. You are all going to the same place, so it is as well to be civil to each other on the journey!
Good luck on your journey, I hope that our paths cross, and we may travel together for a time!

Master Samuel Kwok is probably one of the best ambassadors of Wing Chun in the UK today. I have met him on several occasions and find him humble and warm. Full respect to Master Kwok. Su Lin I think he does still train in Blackpool if you are near and want to learn quality wing chun then Master Kwok is your man.
I also know someone who trains in it and from what they've said they do zero sparring, and also "anti-grappling" stuff. Both of which would raise alarm bells as to how effective it is.
