As you travel to the mountain, there may be people ahead of you. You may pass some of these people on the way, and some of them may pass you. You are all going to the same place, so it is as well to be civil to each other on the journey!
Good luck on your journey, I hope that our paths cross, and we may travel together for a time!

There was a point in my training way back in the late 70's Early 80's that exercises that Kurtz refers to as dynamic stretching was all lumped as ballistic. For a brief time in the early 80's 81 or 81 I believe all active stretching was considered bad. But some intelligent beings relized that dynamic stretching within our range of motion without forcing ourselves to go past the point of pain was ok. It was that bouncing to obtain that last 2" could be bad.
Now other banned exercises? Hmmmm. At our school we removed duck walks because of possible injury to knees. Instead I've begun to bring in Groucho Walks (Thanks P90X) it is safer on the knee but strengthens the muscles even more.

TBH i was only born in 78 so i can't really say.
As i said above there are clearly papers written in the 60's that seperate the terms, so I doubt what you say here is true about it being the same. However, I really can't be bothered to argue.

Anyway It really doesn't matter. Why we both agree in the prinicple. Dynamic stretching good, BOUNCING past the ROM with Ballistic Stretching BAD.
Funny thing is that somewhere somebody must think ballistic stretching has benefits. Because despite over 40 years of phyisical development in training, it still remains around here.

I think Rowe's point was that regardless of what writings there are from whatever date, there is a tendency for instructors to hold on to their exercises no matter what the current data is. Many a PE teacher still uses old style hurdler stretches as well as normal sit ups instead of crunches. Just because Kurtz called it dynamic in some writing doesn't mean that was widely accepted right away as such. This goes double for your average martial arts instructor. Most instructors have a habit of just repeating whatever was taught to them "just because". I only know a few instructors personally that are really well versed in anatomy and physiology.

I also get the students on using breathing during stretching. Once they have held a stretch for a while I ask them to breath in and when they breath out to push the stretch further.
