In the medical world doctors say that women on average have a higher pain threshold than men.... Just try getting in the bath with a woman its like LAVA!!!

hehe but that is true.

Second thing is that women are softer and less tense than men so sometimes they can have a bit of an advantage when starting an MA that uses this priciple of softness in the technique.

Wow... even more facts that seem to say I'm actually a woman

Thank you.

Lol

For?

I just fail to see why we need to even think about the differences between men and women who train. So what if we aren't as strong, not all men are that strong, I know a few who I am probably stronger than as I train way harder than they do.

Someone who does martial arts is just that. Perhaps my view is as it is as I am the only woman in both my clubs and I expect to be treated exactly the same as the men.

Seems I lacked mule's wise presence of mind to stay away from this topic. Su Lin, I thanked you for your frankness about being tired of the "men-women" topic. I respect the original poster's sincerity, but this discussion invariably spirals into ever more unfounded stereotypes, and is ultimately about as productive as, say, arguments over what's the best martial art.

That said (ranted, rather, sorry), I'm glad many posters seem to agree that it's not the gender, it's the practitioner (to paraphrase the old "it's not the style, it's the practitioner" line).

I dont think the post was trying to start a battle of the sexes -

Ive seen some solid female fighters that clearly have a high pain threshold - and certainly I wouldnt set foot in a ring with them.

Anyone read any SERIOUS MEDICAL EVIDENCE on the subject?

(Gees as im writing this I can see why Mule chose to be diplomatic)

He He He.
Guys all rolling around with both feet in their mouths.

Ladies/Women in MA are interesting.

There are definitely some areas women are better at than men.

Wu Ming mentions pain tolerance, which Ryusui correctly backed up.

For what it's worth, women are more graceful, more thoughtful, more vicious and more spiteful than men.

I'm a notorious supporter of the underdog and I especially respect women who ignore the male driven stereotypes they're supposed to adopt, raise two fingers and get on with it.

Now don't take this bit the wrong way ladies, but it's a bit like how society deals with disability.
Relating to Su Lins comment, disabled people don't want any special treatment, they want to push boundaries.

We're all doing the same thing.
Men, women, children, young, old, disabled, supernaturalgiftedluckyfecker or whatever, we all want to push at the 'height of possibility'.
We're all at different heights, but looking at the same objective.

Enough of my mulings.

BTW, a ladies member of Martial Edge, 'CTD' just took Silver in the world BJJ championships yesterday, so slaps on the back all round are due.

Good luck on your journey, I hope that our paths cross, and we may travel together for a time!

I think people fail to see the point of this. It doesn't matter what you think men and women are different. Its just nature you can't fight it. Men have qualities and women have qualities and together they compliment a natural harmony.

Ego's have no place in this thread, I too am fed up of women saying they are just as good as men and vise versa, We know all people have their qualities but there are ON AVERAGE certain traits which are NATURALY different. Thats all I was saying.

So please don't try to defend your sex because it really isn't a war, its getting old and boring.

Peace...

Woh, guys - I'm really not trying to cause controversy - I'm just trying to understand physiology with regards to training. Working to our strengths, understanding ourselves better. Do we really learn anything by saying 'lets not look'?

I'm with Pete on this, the only thing I'm interested in, is learning how we as martial artists - male and female - work with our physiology and how we can use serious medical evidence to our advantage.

Tonyli, Su Lin, Mule and Ryusui_Ryu are all right, and it does come down to the individual.

However, there are undeniable 'averages' - we cannot ignore the fact that male and females are scientifically shown to have differences in the way our endocrine systems and brains work (we're all going to be in different places within that average)

For example science finds:

The average human female has a greater capacity withstand prolonged pain than the average male.

The average male, under a demanding situation will, because of his hormonal system - continue to produce adrenaline long after the average female does.

I just wondered, how all this stuff might be reflected in how we, as individuals train - really didn't mean to cause any offence!

I understood where your coming from Wu Ming.

I know one thing that is different between men and women initially and thats the 'Ego'

Its stronger in men due to our Macho nature... Could this ego get in the way of training?? (In some people not all)
