Discipline in MMA 3 Months ago
I think one of the things that can take MMA away from the Art side of MA is when there is a lack of self discipline.

I came across this video on Martial Edge and I've been discussing it with MA people elsewhere;
http://www.martialedge.net/option,com_seyret/task,videodirectlink/Itemid,2/id,237/

In particular, look at 2:58

Thoughts?

Some pretty violent stuff in there. I remember one of the early UFCs where this guy elbowed striked this guy in the head 6 times until the guys body went limp.

I know its all about the show but they should realise that as professionals young people look up to them. If there hero can head stamp, why cant they?

This has absolutely been my thoughts about MMA and what puts traditional martial arts apart, is MMA'a lack of self discipline. It also shows the difference between skilled fighting and violent brawling - this clip illustrates that.

I'm not saying there is no skill in MMA but part of the skill of being a martial artist is self discipline and knowing when to reign it in.

I agree Pete, repeatedly stamping on someone's head is not a good example to set; is there any difference between doing that in the ring and out on the street?

Some dodgy underpants as well!

It just crosses the line for me, when the opponent is no longer able to defend themself.
One extra shot can happen in the heat of the moment, but if this wasn't in a sanctioned event, some of these guys would be up for attempted murder.

Be interesting to read what everybody else thinks.

There's a big difference IMO.

Some dodgy underpants as well!

I don't think the headstamp can be in anyway condoned in any situation. Just like kicking someone in the head whilst unconscious shouldn't. If you're in a position to headstamp, either your opponent is dazed, unconscious or you are in a superior position. No need.

The first guy was just a complete chump. there's no reason to get so involved that it takes 5 stewards to restrain you. Idiot.

Grrr tried to edit my post and it all went pear shaped!

Anyway,in a nutshell: try not to jump on the "oooh mma is all thugs and dangerous bandwagon people. There are bad fights and strikes in all types of fighting, not just mma. The majority of fighters are highly disciplined and the rule sets generally mean that kind of thing doesn't happen often at all. Yes anyone doing anything illegally should be dealt with but please try not to get all "see, this is why I don't like mma ..." etc on it because of an isolated incident.

Odd Su Lin, your messages aren't showing up on here but did on the email.

Anywhoooo, i agree there is a good amount of skill in MMA and obviously its not only MMA that suffer from lack of discipline, you see it in all MAs.

The only issue i have is with headstamping and continuing to attack after the opponent is clearly down. Both i think are totally unnacceptable in any situation. Those who do this should be banned or suspended from competition.

I messed up editing them Tom, but re-edited one, in a nutshell!

THe mma fights I have seen have always been reffed really well. To be honest I have seen more dodgy illegal moves be allowed in points playing matches than I have in mma fights!

Personally, I'm not.

It's in the interests of the sport and all MA that this kind of thing is exposed and discussed though.
If we don't self-regulate, then the party will get pooped on for everybody.
