Becoming a black belt imo is the antithesis to bullying. I personally hate bullies, having been their target when a skinny weakling growing up--till I got my sea legs, so to speak--and then I became a lifelong champion of the bullied. It's my primary reason teaching the MA's, to prevent kids being bullied.
So if I'd promoted a BB, who then picked on lesser ranks, I'd have to make a point of demonstrating techniques on him until he remembered we're all fragile It's the human condition.
A little humility goes a long way in the BB/Instructor ranks. Just as it takes very little arrogance from the top to poison the whole training hall or club.

Bullying is wrong, end of. No excuses, no reasons.
It must be taken seriously in any organisation be that educational, employment, club or society. It must be drawn to the bully's attention that their actions are unacceptable and if it continues they must be removed from the organisation.
If, however, the bully is at the head of the organ those arround them should remove themselves from the organisation.
Just my opinion.

In our club before we start a lesson we say omigashimas (i think thats how u spell it)
Which means please teach me... The Sensei also says this showing respect through all ranks knowing that we can all learn from each other.
Senior ranks have no right to bully anyone but I don't disagree with seniors deligating tasks to lower grades like putting the mats away or something like that.
Black belts don't mean you a tough guy anyway, in all fairness despite the MA training if a guy clouts you one coz you push him the wrong way I doubt it would be within the confines of the art form!
Respect respect respect!!!

Warning Warning - Language Nerd Alert!
onegaishimasu - a very polite way of asking "please" that is context sensitive. It is a way of making a request, but the object of the request usually precedes it ( mizu onegaishimasu - "water, please" ). In the case if being in the dojo, the fact that you are requesting to be taught is implied.
End Of Warning
I whole-heartedly agree with the vibe you guys are on. All martial artists should respect those around them regardless of rank. Bullying is the exact opposite of the proper conduct of a real martial artist. This is why the "incident" that happened in the Olympics makes all of us look bad regardless of nationality or style/system.

End Of Warning I had a German (language) professor like you in the 70s... In fact, were you....Oh, never mind.

Bullying from a black belt? I am truly shocked that that is happening.
Of course, bullying is vile but from a black belt is unmentionable as the whole point of the various ethics of martial arts is to combat people of such a disposition.
Personally, I think that a bully forfits the right to have a black belt, if found to be guilty then they lose the rank and be bumped back down to white belt.

And this is the key thing that a bully feeds on and is the most crippling thing for the recipient. It isn't the violence or the verbals that are most damaging but been given the impression that it is somehow your fault, that there is something intrinsic in you that deserves to be bullied.
This is of course rubbish as it is the bully who has a personality problem, not the person being bullied.
