male/female differences in training 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
As someone still new to MA - I'd love to know - do men or women have better pain tolerance?

What other differences in training affect males and females differently?

Good questions.

I'm saying nothing.

Ace topic!

Well I guess we can start with what are the male and female strengths and weaknesses.

Physically, I'm smaller and lack power but I do have endurance, I'm also bendier.

Mentally, from what I've noticed in my association women tend to have more patience and are more conscientious - therefore will bother to learn the theory more and will stick at something for longer if they find it difficult.

However, men are better risk takers and are more likely to try something they are not comfortable with and therefore succeed at a more difficult move. Women will stick with what is comfortable.

While I'm at it, jumping kicks are something I find impossible.

I can do spin kicks till I'm blue in the face but as soon as you put a jump in there, I look like someone's thrown a gerbil across the room.

Most men tend to be much better at jump kicks than woman, any ideas why?

In the medical world doctors say that women on average have a higher pain threshold than men.... Just try getting in the bath with a woman its like LAVA!!!

hehe but that is true.

Second thing is that women are softer and less tense than men so sometimes they can have a bit of an advantage when starting an MA that uses this priciple of softness in the technique.

But men are stronger on average, and I would think that men also on average have an analitical mind more so than the average female which can work as an advantage when training to study balance and posture but women tend not to brake things down mentally like men and just do rather than analyse which can also have its advantages.

I don't believe one is better than the other, just different. In fact by unifying both perspectives we can train with a more wholesome view and understanding of MA and life in general.

I train just as hard as the men in both my clubs. I take the same risks,I spar. I know I am smaller and not quite as strong but I haven't really noticed much difference really- I can do jumping kicks as well as they can, possibly with a bit more grace.
One thing I have noticed though, my kung fu and mma teachers both say I am really fluid and I noticed the men I train with aren't generally as fluid and smooth in their movements.
You can't really generalise too much as it differs from woman to woman and man to man really.

This is true

To be frank (as if I wouldn't be ) I get a bit tired of the "men women" thing in ma, I train and I don't see the difference or much point in trying to point out the difference.I just want to get on and train ,being a woman really doesn't bother me

i try not to differentiate between men and women in training as much as possible. the one caveat i have to this is that practical self-defense tends to be different for men and women only because of the type of attacks we are more likely to encounter.
