Online Martial Arts Training 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have been training karate for a couple of years, and I wanted to become more familiar with different styles of martial arts, but without going from dojo to dojo spending lots of money.

So I came across this site www.SatoriInternational.com which offers online training, and wanted to see if anyone is a member or if you had any thougts about this site. The stuff I see in this site looks awesome, and they have master instructors in karate, Jiu Jitsu, Kuntao, Ninjitsu and others.

I found clips too on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/SatoriInternational

Any thoughts?

Personally I think the online training benefits are good in that it gives you a good idea about the style etc but as for a substitute for real life training with an instructor im not too keen on the idea.

I know the guys behind the Satori Martial Arts School and they are the real deal though.

Interesting post

How did you hear about them? These guys seem to know their stuff.
I'm actually looking at online training to compliment my own. It is a really good deal for all the information they have. I think I'm going to get their throwing DVD, it looks great!

I interviewed Dave and his brother in 2006. Great martial artists and great business people. They put the capital 'P' in Professional martial arts instruction.

Well thats my humble opinion anyway.

I look at online training the same way as I did when I watched football as a kid. If I saw a top footballer do a football trick I would try and learn it, then try and master it and then try it in a match. It still meant practice and hard work and ultimately I still had to try and make it work in the environment it was meant to work in.

If I see something I like in a clip, a boxing/kickboxing/mma bout or even film, I'll try to train it, access whether I can add it to my toolkit and once I can do it, try it in sparring/rolling against a non-compliant partner.

Just my general thoughts

ps - I was rubbish at football!

I don't see anything wrong with learning from books and DVD's in respect to give your mind new ways and idea's to incorporate but it will all be worthless is it is not equally balanced with good practical practise.

What is thoery with no practise? A bunch of idea's that no-one can make happen.

What is practise with no thoery? A course of action with no purpose or reason.

If you just read books and watch dvd's you won't really learn anything except useless theory but put that together with good practise and you will only expand your knowledge.

good point i think it is a good idea but only to improve in the martial art you are training in. you realy need a instructor or someone who is expirienced in a certin martial art to realy show you what it is realy like.

I couldn't agree more with what's been said. Ryu has the right idea with balancing the two, although ideally you should have more practical training than self instruction.

It's better to treat the DVD and book situation as "research" rather than schooling or instruction.

I used to be a firm believer in self teaching being a perfectly acceptable way of learning martial art. I soon learned differently .

There is a very...interesting man by the name of Erle Montaigue who's reputation no doubt preceeds him. Depending on who you speak to said reputation will vary, I personally don't go a lot on this guy, but it's good to mention him as he offers lessons via webcam! At a bargain £20 per hour...

Would be good to get him on here to justify how that constitutes proper instruction.

Peace

Im currently in the process of videoing my whole sylabus and putting on my website for my students to access. They can then remind themselves visually of the techniques when working towards a grading. Didnt have any plans to open it up to the masses.. but think this might be a good idea.. and as you have all said, it only works when practiced!
