Perforated Ear Drum 4 Months ago
Evening,
Any body on here had a perforated ear drum before?
I got mine in while training yesterday (punch to the ear).
Can you still train while it's healing, or do I have to lay off completely?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Peace,
Andy

I would say lay off completely for a couple of weeks, then check with the doctor before picking up again.

Definately take it easy, a perforated ear drum is because air has ripped through the lining of the drum. Taking another blow can open the tear wider. If you still want to train avoid blows to the head/ears for about two weeks to a month, even with a headguard.

Eeek - that sounds unpleasant, definitely lay off the sparring until it is better.

Hope it heals soon.

Hi Andy,
yeah I've had this.
Then girlfriend, now wife, slapped me on the side of the head.
You'll suffer a slight attenuation of high frequencies in that ear.

We rely on our ears for balance, so light duties and no parkour or fancy aerial kicks for you for a couple of weeks.

If you're in the habit of going to Rock Concerts, you can get Ear defenders that cut down the volume.
I find my ear very sensitive to high levels of low frequency now.
I'd avoid wearing headphones for a while too.

Thanks for the advice everyone, really appreciated....
I'm gonna have a complete rest from training for 2 weeks, (no matter how much I feel like going!), then I'll go and see the Doc, and fingers crossed, it will be on the mend.
Luckily, my instructor has gone away for the next week, so I'll take over the teaching duties while he's away, so at least I can keep my hand in it, without actually exerting myself.
I hate injuries like this, where you cannot see for yourself how good or bad the healing process is going.
Oh well, headguard it is for the next few months.
Shame, I will probably have to pull out of the next two competitions that I'm down for doing.

You not seen a GP yet???

OK.

DON'T get water in your ear.
DON'T submerse your head.

You run the risk of infection.

Keep it dry and maybe put some cotton wool carefully into your outer ear.

Went the very same day to the Docs, my good man, I never leave anything like that to chance. I'll go again in a few weeks for a check up. Luckily, where I work, we have some on-site nurses, who said they'll keep an eye on it over the next few weeks.
