Preventing and over coming injuries 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago  
Hi all

Over the last week I did a really stupid technique, and when I landed my back went into spazms. I have been in bed for 3 days, and limping around ever since. I realised this is part a reoccuring injury from when I was a attacked a few years ago. But I thought I had put this behind me.

What do you do to prevent injuries particularly old ones and does anyone have suggestions for dealing injuries once they happen?

If it's muscular injury to the back, then it can be two weeks to feel better, but 6-10 weeks to properly heal.
Muscular injury can indicate an underlying problem.
I know some people think it's quack medecine, but I found a chiropractor really helped me a few years back.
My own injury, like yours, was as a result of doing something stupid, but the chiro found the underlying problem.

Modern medecine seems to approach the symptoms rather than the cause.

As always, seek proper medical advice rather than amatuer opinion on forums.

I have bad back issues too, I get tui na treatment for mine about every 6 weeks as it isn't just my back ,it's other things getting mis aligned and training sparks it off.

Generally I try and make sure techniques are good but when you are sparring sometimes injuries just happen. I kept getting rib compression issues when rolling and someone got into side control and rested their weight on me but now I am learning how to not get in that position,or if I feel like I am going to I adjust my position slightly.

I also take supplements- Omega 3 and glucosamine/chondroitin to make sure my joints stay ok and make sure I stretch out properly when training.

There's only so much you can do though ,and like Mule says, it's always better to get medical advice where things like backs are concerned. Just being sensible and resting (like I tend not to stupidly ) is vital.

I know what thats like!! I've had my fair share of back issue's.

A few years ago I had a disc in my lumber prolapse slightly and it caused my lots of problems for a number of years and even now I have to be greatly aware of it although it doesn't stop me training!!

I spent a number of years with accupuncture and now recently I found an excellent chiropractor. I would only recommend seeing a chiro or osteopath if your not hyper mobile and have very lax ligaments and tendons as this kind of treatment can be bad for you.


You will have to be aware of your back once you get better. The best thing is to learn good back streches and exercises, find a ongoing treatment that suits you, e.g accupuncture, Chiro whatever and be aware of your body. Don't keep stretching out pain only stretch 2-3 times a day to give your back time to settle.
After about 4 years of back problems I am now at a pretty good point with mine and its stronger than its been in a long time.

So sorry to hear about your back injury. Rehab it as soon as possible. Many doctors, afraid their patients will reinjure themselves and sue them, recommend too much rest, which ultimately is counterproductive. For example, I injured my rotator cuff fighting out of a kimura, and treated it with ice and immobilization. I ended up with a good case of frozen shoulder syndrome that took me a lot longer to fix than if I had rehabilitated my shoulder early on.

As mule said, a muscle injury can feel better soon (muscles get good circulation) but take a long time to fully heal. My torn rhomboid took 18 months. Early rehab speeds healing, which reduces the amount of time that your injury is vulnerable to reinjury.

Never do the standing forward bend stretch, especially with a back injury. There are many safer stretches for the posterior muscle chain that won't compromise lower back stability. Opt for calf stretches, modified hurdle stretches, and the like. And phase in strengthening exercises -- deadlift, bent over rows, etc. -- as soon as you can. Start without resistance (even doing them in water if you need to), and gradually increase the resistance.

A good gauge for a healthy back is being able to deadlift a 10-rep set of your body weight or more. Trainers often make their athletes build up to twice their body weight. Wherever you set your goal, keep in mind the advice that everyone here has already given to be sensible, listen to your body, and consider the advice of medical professionals. Good luck!

I have had the rotator cuff thing recently Tony.......from getting out of a kimura! Very painful.

In terms of back pain, doctors over in the UK are bad at dealing with backs. I got signed off work for a few weeks and that's all he was willing to do, I had to push physio, which was pretty useless so ended up sorting my own physio (the tui na) out.

Sorry to hear about your back, they can be a nightmare to clear up.

Unfortunately, as much as I find I try to prevent injuries such as warming up etc (which you must do of course) I find it is the stupid little things that can cause an injury. Such as when I fell over and tweaked my knee and been troubled by it ever since.

You say that you injured your back from being attacked, that sounds awful!

Nothing could have prevented me dropping a drawer on my foot last night except me not being an idiot!
