anything with jackie chan (yes i do enjoy his cheesy style of action comedy)

Enter the Dragon and Crouching Tiger , God, I'm som predictable! Oh, and does anyone remember the cartoon skills of Hong Kong Phooey?

And here's a question, what's the worst martial arts movie you've ever seen?

American Kickboxer King...

80s Western attempt at Chinese imitation... trash. Rediculous scattered plot, english actors, yet was dubbed in English so theres a slight delay on the voice. Poorly and robotically choreographed.... I could slander it endlessly without remorse.

Now for a few of my favourites...

Ong Bak - The spiral staircase scene is simply awe inspiring. It is a three minute scene done solely in one single take. The camera follows Tony Jaa as he climbs three or four sets of stairs, destroying banisters, throwing people over the edge, simply...amazing.

Fearless - For being pure art. Rarely does a martial arts film capture the beauty of the practice...

As always, Bruce will have to get a mention, but not because the films were of particularly good quality, I think it's a mix of it both being an intergral part of my childhood/inspiration for pursuing the MA, and Lee's undeniable power, contrasted with his impecable restraint.

EDIT: I will not ammend my poor grammar as I'm so very tired (Excercise makes me sleepy)and am off for an early night's sleep. But I will mention that I am aware of my poor spelling/sentence structure and can only appologise.

Post edited by: LiuShuiDao, at: 2007/10/16 05:48

erm worst ma film i ever seen would have to be either house of flying daggers (sorry beedham) or crouching tiger hidden dragon cos of the constant twists and no real plot, not even close to realistic fighting scenes.

faves would have to be hero, one upon a time in china 1,2,3,4 erm drunken master with jackie chan is awesome too, oh and enter the dragon is defo the most cool ma film i know

jet li used to be one of my least fave ma actors cos i thought he was too serious to be appealing but ive realised his fight scenes and good directing more than make up for him being dull.

i think we should specifically discuss wong fei hung films and related media cos he pops up in sh**laods of chinese ma movies
keep the chattin going!

OOH almost forgot i have to recomend 'the last hero in china' despite the acting being a but crappy the fight scenes are very real, and the richness and historical relevence more than make up for it (its about supression of hans by the more socially elite ocupying manchu forces)(or vice versa i cant remember too well)

Heres a few of my top ten.

1) Ong Bak - Tony Jaa is just, excellent in his films. Particuarly in:

2) The Protector - For this reason: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=K06wDn3XsZE

3) Fearless - It's artisitc style is so graceful that it, in my opinion captures the more spiritual and beautiful side of martial arts. Also theres a large emphasis on compassion. Which I'm very big on in MA.

4) Twin Warriors - Childhood memories.

5) Oldboy - Gripping story, gritty, real fightscenes. (Look out for the side scrolling "Hammer" scene.)

looks like jagger doesn't like a plot to his ma films!

i don't have a least favorite ma film, i just hate it when you get rubbish fight scenes in action films.

my friends hate me for complaining about films when the fight scenes come on

I can see Jagger's point about House of Flying Daggers. She did take a very long time to die in the end did she not? And the twists were very close together... HOWEVER, beautiful fight choreography. Although, a little too much reliance on CGI and wires.. HOWEVER, the bamboo forest scene is just amazing.

So I take no position on this, HOFD wasn't so strong on story, but was visually satisfying.
