This maybe an age old question, have you ever met someone who does another style, and the conversation ends up with 'if you did this then I would do that' and you know to prove the theory you are going to move from theory into application? What do you do?

Say "Let's settle this outside in 5 minutes"
See how many pints you can get down, having a laugh with your mates, before he comes back in looking for you.

As you travel to the mountain, there may be people ahead of you. You may pass some of these people on the way, and some of them may pass you. You are all going to the same place, so it is as well to be civil to each other on the journey!
Good luck on your journey, I hope that our paths cross, and we may travel together for a time!

Tell them that they are right and walk away. It annoys them and saves you the pointless conversation that would have followed.

Ah mule, one day I will ask a question you will take seriously! That said I see avoidence is your prefered tactic for dealing with this situation. But often you know its going to end with 'show me', where do you go from there?

Ronin, sorry to appear flippant in my response.
I don't do pissing contests though.
In life, I walk away, but if I can't, I drop people, or they drop me.
Maybe I misunderstod the question?

But isn't learning a martial art about understanding others? Or is the assuption like Mule's point this is going to end in a fight?
It depends on the people having the conversation and the context I suppose.
From experience, outside the training hall as soon as "if you did this, I'd do this.." is uttered there is not going to be a genuine exchange of ideas or concepts. There are going to be two people talking at each other and no one actually listening.

I think that discussing possible moves and tac tics is pretty harmless, but I often get this kinda thing from people who don't practise MA.
They say oh what if a guy is massive and a ex con hard nut would it work then.... I'm like listen to that question and answer it yourself.. MA isn't super powers!!
If anyone gets into the oh my styles better than yours then thats just a time to walk away from the subject. How ever if someone says oh I will do an arm bar if you go down this way, and the other person says well i would move with it and try to counter.. etc etc I don't think this is to bad as its fun to talk crap sometimes, but if you really wanna test it then its time for some application

The last time I was back in England I ended up in a conversation with someone I didn't want.
He knew I was living in Japan and back in the day when he knew me he knew I did some martial arts. After a few drinks the conversation turned to him having done 6 months of Capoiera (if thats how you spell it ) and he started talking to me about how effective it is and that if I did this, that and the other of karate techniques against him he would just do (insert flip name here) spin around on his hands and kick me in the head.
This conversation was going on for a while but I wasnt actually saying much but was being told by a guy with 6 months training what I would do with my 8 and a half years.
I think a lot of this kind of talk comes from inexperienced people that havent recieved enough of a kicking to know when to be quiet. I think it is best mainly to ignore these people unless they engage you in a conversation like "I hear karate punches a little differently from (insert other style here). Could you explain."

Tony Swain - It's so true that these inexperianced people do a little training and think they can kick your ass lol... not that MA is about who can beat who anyway but I have another kind of anecdote.
My friend who has NEVER trained in his life has often thought about things in the past and has come up with his own crazy theory's about how to defend himself. He has of course showed and discussed them with me and I have pointed out flaws...
For e.g. he believe that if he keeps waving his hands across his face and torso in a guard like manner then no one would be able to land a punch. The first thing I did to him was a side kick (lightly) to his knee area which was completely open and due to him waving his arms about it took him by surprise and he toppled slightly. If this was followed up by more attacks and techniques he would not have a chance.
Suffice to say he learned a small lesson there.
I do wonder how many people out there have these crazy theory's about fighting when they have had no experiance apart from watching films etc...
