Yeah when I first started training, from white belt to around green belt I had alot of back problems. Physio, Tai Chi and finally a chiropractice to get the thing sorted out! Looking back from a personal perspective it was, what I believe my body getting used to new forms of movement. Basically they were not up to scratch and my core strength (i.e. stomach etc were weak).

My advice would be to go see the doctor and tell him how its affecting your mobility and that the pain is bad. (When your a young guy they just fob back pain off!!) Hopefully you can get an assessment from a trained physiotherapist and see what the problem is and research like hell what exercises you can incorporate into your training to reduce and eventually stop the pain.

Although my back is alot better now, I still get pain occasionally particularly after an explosive kick session.

But dont worry, it will be ok!

Hey ther, one of my students has been teachin TKD for years, he's had the same problem with his back.

his was to do with the fact that kicking produces a lot of stress on the back mussles, traditonally martial arts would be taken up by the young that did not have developed mussles, so as they trained they would develop the musscles from an early age, as the body gets odler the mussles are harder to train as they are "set in their ways" as such! i would sugges some core mussle training for the back! i.e. plank, leaning on a SB with a straight back, leg pull ups.

Post edited by: WT North, at: 2007/10/07 06:13

i would sugges some core mussle training for the back! i.e. plank, leaning on a SB with a straight back

ok the plank: lie on the floor, support yourself with your elbows and get into a press up position, just hold for as long as possible.

sb= stability ball also called fit ball, put your lest on the sb and keeping a very straight back do press ups, or just hold position on SB

Hey, I posted a little topic about martial arts combining with Yoga. There is a book aimed at improving techniques for martial arts via yoga, especially for help with kicks. I'll try get the name of it and get back to you about, it may help.

The three best core strength exercises for high kicks are:

1. Deadlift
2. Deadlift, and
3. Deadlift. ;-)

It strengthens the mid back, lower back, sides under the ribs, shoulders, glutes, hamstrings, and more.

Here's a good demonstration I grabbed from a YouTube search:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pjBI9qxibTc

If you don't have a barbell, you can use dumbbells, large water jugs, or anything that allows you to maintain good form. Just take it easy while you're learning the technique, and ask an experienced lifter if you have questions.
