Flexibility 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Alright, so I guess children are pretty flexy.
I know I was when I was a child, unfortunatley I only *PROPERLY* started MA training when I was older, and with no use for it it sorta deacreased.

So my question is, can felxibility lost be regained at any point?

I mean if it's gone forever then...the possibilities of what you can do in MA is narrow(er).

Thanks for any replies in advance.

i suppose it helps if you start earlier with flexibility, but when i started taekwondo i was very very inflexible, but aslong as you stretch regularly and properly (not going to start that argument again!) you can soon reach a decent level of flexibility.
after about a year i can almost do box splits, maybe another half a year ill be there, and have recently been able to perform those other sort of splits, you know the ones where you have one leg in front and one behind but only when im properly warmed up.
i was still a bit flexible from when i did gymnastics as a very young boy but you are younger than me so you should be able to become flexible enough to perform any kick or technique you would ever need to.

sorry i just read through that and realize its a bit of a mess, basically just work at it, anyone can increase their flexibility

(not going to start that argument again!) aaw go on! (kiddin)

i was never flexible, compared to average of my age ive always been a bit stiff

although im about as flexible since i started tkd training as when i was at peak in childhood flexibility - so yeah it can be regained but it is always better to have parents who get you into MA's (or ballet etc) early enough to take advantage (saving you a LOT of trouble and effort later)

i cant say whether my max flex has been reduced or not by starting late but i will probably never reach the maximum point of flexibility anyway so no worries very few people will ever reach max that thier body could ever be so it wouldnt worry about it.
and even if it has had a worse effect than im guessing, its spilt milk so not somthing worth worrying about in that respect as well

Hey big man.

Your flexibilty is not what you think. I was really impressed today seeing you flash some right kicks!

Last year I interviewed a guy called Dave Kovar who runs a very successful martial arts organisation in California with his brother Tim. He gave me some of the best advice ive ever heard about flexibility. At the end of the day he said some people have it, and some people dont. But martial arts is more then just falling into the splits. Make it up with other tools, a fast turning kick, strong punches etc etc.

Hes trained with some of the biggest names in US Martial Arts, names that after a lifetime of dropping into the spits, forcing their bodies to stretch in positions they were not genetically made for are now falling apart!!

As you all know here at Martialedge the editorial are all impartial, so take from that what you will. I know I did!
