Out of action due to injury... 2 Months ago
Hey guys,

I've been having a few knee problems recently which I have been dealing with sensibly.
I went to training on wednesday and was cautious about my knee's, on this day they were feeling pretty good.

Anyways towards the end of training my thigh muscles started aching a bit, and as I crouched during a move I stood up and my right thigh blew out on me... meaning it had a painful ache and felt dead for like a few seconds..
It faded quick however so I was more cautious...

I then crouched a little into a stance and my right thigh did it again.. I came off the mat and went to do a light stretch then it suddenly felt like it was gonna cramp, so I basically fell to the floor in pain... I massaged it and managed to prevent cramping.

Stupidly after about 5 mins I carried on with the lesson... I havent had thigh pains before and though it was just being tempermentle as I had just had a week off training because of knee pain.

Anyway it was aching but I didn't think to much of it, after the session the thigh started ceaseing up and was painful to walk on!! I woke up today and now I can't walk stairs without my jo (staff) aiding me. The thigh now feels tight and hurts on the outer top of the right thigh... I never had this pain before and need to see a doc tomoz...

Anyone had similar pains?

Could be spinal.
Trapped nerve or disc damage.
as always, get it checked out by a professional and don't let them be unprofessional about it.

Well I went to the docs today and he said that my iliotibial band is injured and I will need 6-8 weeks off training, maybe a little less with some physio therapy etc.

I am pretty bummed out but the injury heals well and shouldn't cause any permanment damage or weakness.

*sigh*

Thanks for the sympathy :)

I have to say I agree with mule, RR, sounds like you may have either some lumbar vertebrae disc damage, or else damage to the sciatic nerve itself. Both of these injuries are commonly caused by inflamation of the S.I. (sacroiliacal) joints. These joints (situated near the bottom of your spine on either side) amongst other things bear the weight of the twists and turns of the trunk of the body and provide a "self-locking" mechanism that helps you to walk.

Get it checked out by a doctor and, as mule says, don't take no for an answer or be fobbed off with inconclusive ramblings about "Sciatica" by your GP.

Sorry to hear about your injury Ryusui_Ryu.

I'm no expert on physiology, but I have had 2 car crashes and pneumonia to keep me out of training, and I feel your frustrations.
Best advice I can say is don't jump back into training too soon without treatment and until you are fully recovered.

Have to agree with axelb and others who've recommended taking your time, RR. Six weeks is a frustrating layoff, but if you aggravate something by returning too soon, it could turn into months or longer.

Will do guys, thanks for the advise!

Best to take my time rather than rush in and screw myself up for another month!

It sucks coz at the moment, if I rest my guitar on my leg to play it hurts! arrg. Bugger it though I can adjust so it doesn't hurt too much..

Could do wrist and hand exercises and stuff for a few days till I can start working on the legs a bit more!

:)

Hey RR sorry to hear you out of action, bout 5 weeks ago training for my next belt we were doing various attacking line up. I was defending against all random attacks when a new starter can at me. He was quite a bit bigger than me and unexperianced in fallin although he attacted me in such a way he needed to be thrown, which as I tried to control more I threw him on my foot. For muscle pain can recommend a chinese oil Huoluo oil. I am friendly with a chinese doctor she gave me this and it works great. Smells a bit strong but does give relief when massaged into affected area
