Bouncer 'fight night' condemned
A row has broken out over plans to stage a "fight night" in Manchester to find what organisers have described as Britain's "hardest bouncer".
Sixteen nightclub doormen will fight each other for the title and for a £10,000 prize fund in the event, which is being staged by KO Promotions.
Manchester City Council and the bouncers' regulatory authority have condemned the idea.
But KO spokesman Chris Bacon said it was being shown in the wrong light.
'Normal guys'
"It's a reality TV show culminating in a competition. And this is going to show these people in home life, and their work on the door and going out in their day jobs," he said.
"You've got guys from right across the country, that are normal hard-working guys, that actually do doors at night and do like to do boxing."
Pat Karney, spokesman for Manchester City Council, said that the contest could put the winner at risk.
He said: "That guy's going to become some sort of tourist attraction - it's going to be provocative.
"And you're going to get some of the idiots with too much alcohol down them saying, 'I hear you're the hardest doorman in Britain - show me'... I'm hoping that they'll think again about this."

Well I do see the risks that they speak of. You probably would get some kind of idiot thinking that, probably because it's something people recognise as being 'reality' as opposed sports compitition.
Seeing which bouncer is the toughest gives the impression of guys who have to look intimidating and act 'hard' are going to bash heads and ego's and see who will win. I would expect that KO would do it tastfully rather than just let them slug it out I'm sure.
But...
These guys are big boys and know what its like out there and if they want to go ahead with it despite the possible fronts from people after they have gained a small celebrity status then let them do it.

Personally, I actually agree with the condemnation. Getting bouncers to slug it out is, in my opinion, in poor taste and giving the idea that this is the whole role of a door supervisor.
I thought that trying to solve problems in night clubs via persuation and talk first and diffusing angry situations without violence should be encouraged rather than physically.
Of course, that probably doesn't work in real life but this event will encourage the idea that bouncers are there to have a pop at and that their first method of dealing with trouble is to thump someone.
I'm probably being a bit idealistic here but personally think the event is in poor taste.

Okay, just lost my reply.
Firstly, if this was people from a different professions would people be as against this? After all the police and armed forces have boxing competitions.
I don't really get the reason for this contest other than the promoter trying to make a quick buck out of tv money. It doesn't do the image of door staff any favours. Plus as people have pointed out the winner may gain some notoriety, but will he have to watch his back more in the future?
One last thought though wasn't Mr T discovered on a TV show called America's Toughest Bouncer? I've no idea what format the program took. Just think if that program had been stopped, we wouldn't have had Clubber Lang or BA Baracus!
