About six years ago I had a student, Jim that had lived a brutal life. He was the child of a divorced couple; his mother was an alcoholic, his father didn't care for him, and his brother was in prison. Jim joined the army and was discharged just days before his military benefits kicked in because he had a congenital liver disease. After not being able to keep up in Physical Training, the army did some tests and discovered Jim's liver was a mess and it was destroying his stamina. In fact, he was terminal without a transplant.
Over the next year or so there would be several instances in which he should have died because of liver failure. Enter the "Make a Wish Foundation." Jim's wish? He wanted to meet Chuck Norris. It was difficult to arrange because getting in contact with Chuck Norris is hard; he is a busy guy and a lot of people want his time, but after several tries Make a Wish did make the right contact to make Jim's wish come true.
Chuck Norris' people were great, as was Chuck Norris. He invited this ill
karate-ka to come on to the "Walker, Texas Ranger" set; he met the stars of the show, sat in Chuck Norris' chair, and even got to do a background scene.
That day Chuck Norris did everything for a terminally ill guy that had lived a brutal life. In a world of notorious celebrities behaving like petulant little children it is nice to know that Chuck Norris is the kind of guy we all suspected he was... a nice guy, willing to do something for somebody in need and expect nothing in return.
Jim never got his transplant.
