Carrying a knife - Non self defense 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I went walking up in the dales at the weekend and made sure i had all my first aid kit etc. I also put my grandads Pen knife (A scout knife with a blade about 4" long) in my combat pocket.

While i was walking i suddenly wondered what would have happened if i'd been stopped and searched in Leed train station.

In that situation, where it was obviously to be used as tool while hiking, would i have been let off or yanked to the station?

Anyone know about this blurring of the knife laws?

If you look at the link I pasted in another forum post about the sword bad legislation it talks of knifes.

I believe that knifes over 6 or 7" blade is Illegal to carry.

I don't remember the details but if you go on the gov.uk web (if thats where you are) and look up the laws there.

Well I was only wrong by double the size!!! hehe

I guess its 3" because anything longer is mroe threatening and also more fatal if stabbed? I.E its acceptable for that blade for like hiking or camping purposes, but if someone did stab someone the distance to major organs is less likely to be damaged badly with this size knife?

I dunno just thinking out loud

Looks like i'd be okay as long as i could convice the police officers that it was used only for hiking.

Would be an interesting situation if i forgot to take it out my bag pocket and got stopped the day after

An officer friend of mine in the Notts Constabulary
related the following,

The actual is 2.9 inches, if stopped, you will definately be
detained till you can prove why you are carrying said blade
even if it is oramental in nature.

The big thing is how accessible the blade is ?

Due to the fact a 2.9 inch blade can cut your throat!

Heck I can cut your throat with an 1/2" blade.

The use of the blade is often looked upon in societies with out gun use as a major threat. The Society that allows guns often does not see the major threat, unfortunatly.

Knives are important tools, but in the wrong hands are very dangerous.

Not to detract from the obvious seriousness nature of this post but your post Tom reminded me of my first year at school (many moons ago )

Basically, when I was younger I spent alot of time with my grandparents. My grandad was (and is) an old school worthers original grandad.... or for the Americans out there like that guy you have on the Public channels who is always building stuff out of wood in his workshop (cant remember the name but when im over in the states its always on!0

Anyway, I can vividly remember him showing me his pen knife and for some reason I took it to school with me the next day. I remember showing it off and then another kid snatched it, and chased round some kids with it.

haha I cant remember the exact details of how much trouble I was in but my parents said it caused such an uproar they had to move me to another school!!

I'd like to think if i'd left it in one of the pockets inside my backpack then the police wouldn't cuff me and lug me off to jail but you never know.

I certainly don't look like a hoody and would most likely be in my office attire.

Along a similar vein, are you allowed to take a set of Swords to a demonstration (Trad JJ or Iado).

I was at a fete the other day and they had a medievil re enactment with broad swords (blunt-ish). I said I should bring my Katana down but they said I would get pulled as it had a curved blade?

Any one know the low down?
