There is also the issue of mental perperation. Whatever martial art you did would be rendered useless if you couldnt proactively anticipate a situation. It is rare for an attack to come from no where, you will usually get some warning, even if its just the flinch reflex. So its not just the martial art, its the way its trained.

As they say, the absence of thought is the ultimate weapon to a martial artist.

The Ultimate Self Defense = Being aware of your surroundings so you don't get yourself into the situation in the first place :)

Best defense... No be there

Agreed. The best way to lose a fight is to start one.

Just remember if you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

The other thing to remember is that the choice of martial art will be subjective. Some people are natural strikers, some grapplers etc.. so the best martial art is the one that fits your phisical/mental make up..

Hi Everyone!
It may not be a combination of any one or another style. But simply taking what you already know and applying your own personality to it that gives it its effectiveness. After all, I'll bet there are techniques you can do that others can't do successfully. Maybe this is what makes others more successful or gives us a martial edge. No pun intended.

Surely the ultimate self defence is a)not being there in the first place i.e. awareness or b) a sniper rifle
