Hakuda, the term was one of the many japenese expressions to describe close combat systems prior to the widespread use of Jujitsu (which can be spelt a number of ways Jujutsu, Jiujitsu). Hakuda is a generic term for those systems  from the 17th century onward. It can be translated to “beat by hand” “Kan” means home or building Hakudakan “home of close quarter empty hand combat”

Ju translates to compliant or gentle referring to the soft redirection of force, Jitsu translates to art as in a battlefield art rather than a sport, therefore Ju Jitsu is the compliant or gentle art.
