The art of Kenpo (also written as Kempo). With its founding roots traced back to 520 BC., is considered by many to be the first eclectic martial art. Kenpo and Kempo are both pronounced the same (Kem-po) and both mean “Law of the Fist.” Kenpo Karate is a modern self defense art with its origin emanating from both China and Japan. The “Father of American Kenpo Karate” is the late Mr. Edmund Parker. Upon moving to the continental U.S., Mr. Parker felt that his style of karate needed to be modified in order to improve its effectiveness on the American streets. He changed existing techniques and developed new ones to deal with multiple attackers in close quarters. As a result of those innovations, American Kenpo Karate was born
