I think the reason Tai Chi Chuan lags behind is that is not as 'accessible' as other arts. because of its nature it does take a long time to learn, and requires commitment. And this is also why it is so valuable, to take short cuts would denigrate the art, and be of less value to students. The trick is to open it up, without losing its integrity, good luck Matt, and thanks for an excellent article! 
As for it's martial arts status, an ancient Chinese saying is 'The greatest fighter never fights'
