Written by: Dan Lurie with David Robson.

To be released: 2008

Throughout his influential 70-year career in the fitness industry as a strength training, bodybuilding and fitness celebrity beyond compare, Dan Lurie has done it all, conquering seemingly insurmountable obstacles to become one of the sporting world’s most endearing and multi-talented figures. His story – Heart of Steel; the Dan Lurie Life Story - has finally been told. Growing up in the Great Depression, Dan quickly realized that if he were to ‘make it’ like the screen personalities he idolized as a youth, he would need to work extremely hard. Overcoming serious health problems and extreme poverty along the way, this is something he did, and has continued to do throughout his long and successful career as the world’s most accomplished bodybuilding pioneer.

Dan is to bodybuilding and fitness what Muhammad Ali is to boxing. From less than auspicious beginnings to the topDanBOOK COVER 4 copy-1.jpg of the fitness world through persistence and dogged determination, Dan’s story shows exactly what can be done with strength of mind and an unwavering commitment to excellence. That Dan has traversed the fitness world to become a successful bodybuilding competitor and contest promoter, equipment manufacturer, television star, magazine publisher, gym owner, anti-drug crusader, trainer, supplement company owner and devoted family man speaks volumes about his character and his life story does much to illustrate how we can all achieve our very best with sufficient courage and determination.

But Heart of Steel goes much further than your average sporting celebrity life story. Throughout Dan’s career he has met, and in many cases worked closely with, key bodybuilding and fitness insiders. Men like Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and bodybuilding mogul, Joe Weider, weightlifting pioneer Bob Hoffman, champion bodybuilders’ Steve Reeves and Reg Park, Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno, and fitness icon, Jack Lalanne, have featured prominently in Dan’s life and his dealings with them, and many others, are explicitly outlined in Heart of Steel. Dan has also socialized at the highest levels within the political and entertainment spheres. As the only man to have arm wrestled Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office gives you a hint at where he has been and what he has done to stand apart in his own unique, interminable style.

Heart of Steel is also, at turns, a shocking exposition of how firmly entrenched corruption can be within the upper echelons of the often ego-driven bodybuilding industry and a comforting account detailing how one man overcame the odds to ultimately achieve the highest recognition as a fitness personality. More than a ‘Rocky story’ of underdog makes good, Heart of Steel details how with sharp business acumen and a strong ability to communicate with people from all of life’s arenas’ Dan Lurie was able to make the best of what little he began with.

Dan began his bodybuilding career as one of the USA’s best-built men, winning the AAU America's Most Muscular Man title for three consecutive years (1942-’44) – the only man ever to do so. Around this time he became the first man to promote bodybuilding contests and single-handedly developed the bodybuilding industry, as we know it today.
Co- Authored by health and fitness expert and bodybuilding historian, David Robson, Heart of Steel; The Dan Lurie Life Story, is at once an entertaining and revelatory account of Dan’s life and an important historical document. At 15 chapters with more than 200 photos, this book highlights Dan’s rise to bodybuilding fame and recounts all the highs and lows he has experienced along the way.

Heart of Steel details Dan Lurie’s life as:
