Drawing on the author’s decades of experience as both student and teacher, Martial Mechanics explains, in humorous, easy-to-understand language, how physics and kinesiology affect martial arts techniques and how readers can best utilize them to make them faster, more powerful, and hence more effective in actual combat.

Book Review:
I waited with baited breath for this book to arrive on in my mailbox. Having preordered it on Amazon I received it in the mail two days after the actual release. I had spoken with sifu Starr a few times about his upcoming book, and was eager to dive right in.
Starr had told me in passing that this book would be different than any other martial arts text out there. It would teach you as it made fun of you. Knowing his personal teaching style, this came as little surprise to me. I was surprised to actually laugh out loud in sections of the book such as when this scientific question was put forth, “The human body is 60 percent ___________. No, the answer is not beer!” That one immediately was stolen for my own use in the classroom (thanks Sifu).
If martial arts instructors were required to get some kind of college degree before they could teach, then this would be one of the required text books. The trouble with many martial arts instructors is that their personal knowledge is often limited to that of their own instructors. This book will help instructors and students alike pick up the slack as they learn about basic principles of anatomy, physics, and kinesiology. Starr dissects common techniques, the way they are supposed to work, and why they don’t work right any other way.
Starr does a wonderful job of keeping this text unrestrictive in terms of martial style. Between his humor and his basic science you should feel comfortable applying the principles to any martial arts. Indeed, much of the text applies to both the grappling and the striking arts regardless of style.
Phillip Starr on Martial Mechanics
Martial Edge catch up with Phillip Starr, author of 'The Making of the Butterfly' to discuss the release of his new book, 'Martial Mechanics'. Mr Starr is coming to the UK and Ireland in May to hold seminars, (further details in the Martial Edge Martial Arts forums).
My only complaint with this book would have to be the length. It is too short. I had it devoured and digested in two days. Now I’m hungy for more. The upside is this makes Martial Mechanics an easy book to read through and review several times.
